Iowa Secretary of State

Matt Schultz, Council Bluffs city councilman, spoke at the Optimist Club about running for Iowa Secretary of State.  Matt grew up in Des Moines in a family of five boys.  He is an Eagle Scout and went on a two year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints to Argentina.  Matt graduated from the University of Iowa and from Creighton University Law school.  He is married and has three children.  He is fluent in Spanish.

Iowa lost 11,000 manufacturing jobs last year.  Matt would like to create a business friendly atmosphere in Iowa.  Businesses in Iowa have to file with the Secretary of State.  Matt believes that the Secretary of State should be an advocate for jobs and business in Iowa.  Therefore, he believes that he should address the Iowa legislature when proposed legislation will not promote jobs and business in Iowa.

Matt would like to incorporate the federal E-Verify system into the Secretary of State website.  Then employers could utilize that website to verify citizenship.  Businesses would not be penalized for employing illegal immigrants if they used the E-Verify system.

Matt would like to require photo identification in elections.  Currently you have to show a photo ID when opening a bank account, writing a check, and in many other activities.  However, no identification is required for voting.
